UN-HABITAT joins the Government of Italy,the Campania Region and the City of Naplesin warmly welcoming you to the Sixth sessionof the World Urban Forum scheduled 1-7September 2012.

The theme of the Naples Forum, The UrbanFuture, was chosen to remind us all how fast theworld is urbanizing. Already more than half theglobal population lives in towns and cities, andprojections now show that cities will be home totwo-thirds of humanity in little over a generationfrom now.

This means we have to plan our cities better,ensure sound urban legislation and governance,improve basic service delivery and housing. Atthe same time, we have to save energy harderthan ever before, conserve our environment,reduce pollution and tackle the urban dimensionof climate change very seriously. We need tocoordinate these actions and resources forsmarter, more liveable, less wasteful cities ofthe future. We owe it to future generations andwe owe it especially to the estimated 1 billionpeople living in slums and other sub-standardhousing around the world.

We have much to learn from our host cityNaples with its many centuries of accumulatedculture and wisdom. And combining that withthe expertise of thousands of delegates andpartners, the Naples Forum promises to bea landmark global gathering on our planet’sjourney into The Urban Future.

This will be the essence of the 2012 WorldUrban Forum in Naples.
