We observe changes around us, glaciers are rapidly melting, water bodies are drying up, plants and animal boundaries are shifting and the sea level is constantly rising. It is now your opportunity to understand why the planet is experiencing a sizable and most likely permanent change and the impacts of this global climate change on the earth.
It is with great pleasure that we offer you the opportunity to join the new and upcoming courses on Climate Change and Green Cities offered by IHS, Erasmus University Rotterdam:.
1. Free E-learning modules IHS and its partners are offering three E-Learning modules that will run for two consecutive weeks for our valued alumni and IHS ambassadors and we are offering this course for free!
2. Urban Management Tools for Climate Change Cities are increasingly expected to undertake concrete actions to mitigate climate change and adapt the city to rising water levels, drought and other natural disasters related to the heating of earth. What concrete activities should a city undertake and what works?
3. Green Cities for Eco-Efficiency Half the world’s population now live in built-up areas, with an estimated 60 million people being added every year. Two weeks of intensive study on the European policy-making process (5 credits)
Summer School on European Policy-Making
|
Every year in July, the Institute for European Studies (IES) joins forces with the University of Vienna and the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna to organise the inter-university Summer School on European Policy-making. The intensive two-week programme takes place for one week in Brussels and one week in Vienna. Packed with lectures, study visits and simulation games, this programme attracts students and young professionals who wish to broaden their knowledge of the European institutions, European law and the European decision-making process in general. Aside from being a valuable asset in professional life in general, the Summer School has proven to be a great help in preparing for the EU competitions to select future officials. Our alumni can be found not only in the European institutions, but also in national administrations, law firms and academia. For the period 2012-2014, the Summer School receives Jean Monnet funding, as recognition of its excellence.
Programme
The first week in Brussels emphasises the various decision-making actors and looks at the implementation process at national level. Lectures cover topics such as: the EU treaties, EU institutions, the decision-making process and policy-making. Study visits are complemented by lectures from senior academics and by high-level officials from the Brussels-based European institutions.
The second week takes place in Vienna, where a team of experts offer in-depth knowledge of European policy-making in various fields such as: constitutional and legal issues, European Foreign and Security Policy, and Monetary Policy.
The Summer School concludes with two simulation games. Typically, we conduct one in the field of health and safety policy and one in the field of foreign and security policy. (Preliminary Programme)

Course: Carbon Markets, Footprinting & Accounting
Climate change is currently considered to be one of the biggest challenges facing mankind. Climate change, combined with a fast rising global industrialization and population, demands a more sustainable society, industry and commerce. This will undoubtedly put the resilience, flexibility, innovation and creativity of society, commerce and consumers to the test. All these challenges combined explain the exponential rise in development of Carbon Footprinting over the last decade in various sectors and markets.
The Kyoto protocol and Europe’s ambition to play a dominant leading role in facing Climate changes challenges have strengthened the Greenhouse Gas goals and legislation. These goals have placed many companies and industries into a(n obligated) carbon trading scheme. Furthermore, many innovative companies have taken up sustainability, translated into Carbon Footprinting, in their corporate mission. Government, governmental institutions and nonprofit organizations finally, have taken up this ‘hot topic’ to play an important role in every field. All flights taken by the Flemish Parliament members, for example, are being compensated by high valued Carbon credits.
To give rise to these challenges and opportunities and to answer the strong demand from industry and government, BPAC is hosting its first Benelux “CO2 balancing, accounting and trading” training course.
The course runs from 09-11-2012 to 11-01-2013. Please visit the website for complete information.

European Urban Summer School (EUSS) for young planning professionals
In 2010 AESOP launched a new annual event: the European Urban Summer School (EUSS) for young professionals. AESOP wanted to bring together young professionals and experienced academics and practitioners across Europe to discuss planning issues.
AESOP expected that it would facilitate trans-European understanding of planning matters and, as a consequence, will help to improve the quality of life. These aims corresponded with AESOP objectives enumerated in AESOP Charter. AESOP wished to involve both EU and non-EU countries into the project knowing that AESOP has no geographical limits of the membership.
AESOP has offered its resources in teaching at European Urban Summer Schools. This idea was to facilitate trans-European exchange and to foster a debate on the most important planning topics. It was supposed to promote every involved actors as bodies being able to help politicians and other stakeholders in spatial development and management issues.
This concept didn't involve economic profit. The European Urban Summer School should be a platform of debate and exchange and should be run on as low as possible fee for participants. Tutors do not get any fee for their work.
AESOP decided to invite European partners from planning organizations to cooperate in this project. In 2012 the folowing organsations have joined EUSS: European Council of Spatial Planners (ECTP-CEU),International Federation for Housing and Planning (IFHP), International Society for City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP).
