Planning practitioners all over Europe are increasingly confronted with new challenges. Globalisation, environmental problems, accessibility of urbanised areas, immigration and social tensions, identity and cultural heritage, natural heritage, water management and climate change, all affect spatial development of cities and regions. Different European regulations and processes deal with these challenges differently and devising integrated approaches, balancing development with sustainability can be a problem.
